![]() Prepare to lose some time just looking at different areas of the sky. When used with planetarium software, the images from RealSky lie under the display. An additional eight CD-ROMs contain images from the UK Schmidt Telescope up to about 3° declination. Twelve CD-ROMs contain images from the Palomar Observatory Sky Survey, down to declination -12°. RealSky is a version of the same data compressed by a factor of 100. The uncompressed version of this data takes up 102 CD-ROMs. It is based on The Digitized Sky Survey (DSS), a collection of scanned photographic images made with the Palomar Schmidt and the UK Schmidt cameras. RealSky RealSky is a set of CD-ROM disks distributed by Software Bisque. ![]() LunarPhase also displays the Moon's rise, set, and transit times and circumstances of lunar eclipses - including whether they're visible from your location. LunarPhase displays the current phase of the Moon, the illuminated fraction of the lunar disk, the current age of the Moon (since last New Moon), the Moon's celestial coordinates, and its distance from Earth in real time. LunarPhase $30 This program provides a range of information about the Moon. The program will graphically show you the positions of the four large satellites of Jupiter. JupSat95 freeware indigo.ie/~gnugent/JupSat95/ If you're ready to set up your telescope to observe Jupiter, and you'd like to know if its moons are doing anything interesting during the time you'll be out, fire up JupSat95. In other words, don't look at this list as the final word on astronomy software. Also, be on the lookout for new programs not listed here that perform astronomy-related tasks. Some of the software packages I list here will change over time, and changes in software are usually for the better. I write this section with the full knowledge that changes in software are inevitable. To software users, this is a helpful word. Before we begin, please allow me a one-word caveat: upgrade. ![]() However, the ones that do exist are of high quality. It's true that not a lot of astronomy programs are out there, all things considered. Software has come a long way in the past two decades. And I'm really impressed with current computer programs that convey ideas related to astronomy or perform tasks helpful to those who do astronomy. Today, I zoom along on the information superhighway with hardly a glance back. There are supplementay programs that run within CdC to calculate the current and predicted position and appearance of the satellites,as the brightness can vary according to the altitude, sun position, attitude of the object.A few years ago, a friend of mine, who is also an advanced amateur astronomer, had something to say about the time in which we live: "I cannot remember life before the Internet." I have to agree. ![]() Usually indicates that they are pieces of the same launch (engines, boosters, casings, payload, etc). There are sometimes a couple of objects with the same name which Satellites in 2 lines (Two Line Element), usually there is a description line preceding the two lines which will give you the name of the object and its status. TLE files are text data files which describe the orbits of To download the latest data you must register with There is a Download button which will do the download automatically. The program comes with sample TLE files (which are probably out You can find satellite tracking in CdC by clicking on Calendar then Artificial Satellites tab. Sk圜hart is a software to draw chart of the night sky for the amateur astronomer from a bunch of stars and nebulae catalogs. This comes from Rob Currie over Yahoo's Group "Skychart-Discussion" page: Download Sky Chart / Cartes du Ciel for free. ![]() Here is a more detailed explanation of how to use Sky Charts to view man-made satellites and how to add more satellite ephemerals. ![]()
